Joe Arroyo’s second wife and her daughters filed a lawsuit regarding the rights to the late salsa legend’s musical library.
Joe “Joey” Arroyo died of diabetes related illnesses on July 26, 2011. The Colombian born salsa musician produced more than 30 albums during his career. He also married three times during his life.
Arroyo’s second wife, Mary Luz Alonso, claims that her two daughters have not received royalties from Arroyo’s music since their marriage ended.
Royalties for productions of the singer “stopped coming to [Alonso’s daughters] years ago and were assigned by a judge to my family,” explained Arroyo’s wife of 20 years Mary Luz Alonso.
Mary Luz Alonso claims that her childrens’ royalties have been going to the Joeson Music Society, which was established by Arroyo’s third wife, Jacqueline Ramon.
As a result, Mary Luz Alonso has filed a lawsuit against Joeson Music. Mary Luz Alonso and her daughters will be represented by high-profile lawyer Abelardo de la Espriella.
There are legal complications regarding determing the principal and alternate holder of funds going to Joeson Music.
In an agreement signed by Arroyo and Jaqueline Ramon, who together established the Joeson Music Society, “the alternate shall assume the duties of principal in case of physical, mental, permanent or death of the principal.” Jaqueline Ramon may be able to claim legal responsibility for the royalties received by the Joeson Music Society. These issues will be addressed in court.
