Medellin’s Jazz Festival is set to kick off this Thursday, showcasing local acts alongside ensembles from the U.S., who will also hold seminars on the genre to share their knowledge with Colombian music students.
The Black Satin Quintet, the Morgan State Jazz Combo and the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble are headlining the festival at Medellin’s Metropolitan Opera House from June 24 -26.
The event promises to further Medellin’s musical scene while promoting cultural exchange between Colombia and the U.S.
The Colombo Americano Center is organizing the festival, which will also include musicians from EAFIT University, the Fine Arts University Foundation and the University of Antioquia.
Preceding the shows will be two seminars by the Juilliard Jazz Ensemble, from the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, to strengthen the skills of young local musicians through experimentation.
The seminars are on June 22 and 24 at the Casa de la Musica in Parque de los Deseos and will be attended by 56 participants from Medellin’s Music School Red Band, culminating in a free concert at the Cultural Development Center in the Moravia Barrio on Thursday at 5PM.
Tickets to the festival range from COP20,000 – 40,000 with 30% discounts for bulk purchases at the theater box office, Tower Records, Prodisc (in Unicentro), and at Exito supermarkets.
