Coordinated action between Italian and Colombian authorities, and Interpol, on Friday resulted in the arrest of an alleged Italian drug trafficker, Domenico Trimboli, alias “Pasquale,” in the Colombian city of Medellin.
The 58 year-old was one of Italy’s most wanted criminals and was the subject of an Interpol Red Notice, the closest thing to an arrest warrant the organization can issue.
“Trimboli’s arrest shows the effectiveness of international cooperation between police worldwide in obtaining credible and actionable information on the identification, location and apprehension of fugitives around the world,” said Filippo Dispenza, the head of the Italian national police and the Delegate for Europe with INTERPOL’s Executive Committee.
He is said to have links to the Ndrangheta mafia operating in the south of Italy. He was also allegedly the leader of an criminal organization responsible for trafficking vast quantities of cocaine and hashish across Italy.
Colombian media sources claim the Italian will be extradited to Italy, where he will face 12 years in prison, three years on probation and a fine of approximately $52,000.
