The lingering effects of former Hurricane Irene have forced the Colombian national soccer team to delay flights to the U.S. before exhibition matches against Honduras and Jamaica.
Colombia is expected to play Honduras in New Jersey on Saturday. The team faces Jamaica on September 6 in Washington. But coach Leonel Alvarez, his coaching assistants and three players have been stuck in Bogota since Sunday, waiting for their flight to be rescheduled.
The Colombian Soccer Federation says foreign-based players in Europe, Mexico and Argentina also postponed their arrivals to the United States because of the storm.
Colombian airline Avianca canceled all flights to New York and Washington over the weekend because of Irene.
