Colombian Congress’ Investigation and Accusation Commission on Tuesday appointed three congressmen to investigate former President Alvaro Uribe’s role in the illegal wiretapping of government opponents.
Alfredo Bocanegra Varon (Conservative Party) will be the coordinator of the investigation, which will include Heriberto Escoba (PIN) and Augusto Posada (Partido de la U). The three parties are all “Uribista” and were part of the former president’s coalition. According to commission president Hector Javier Vergara, the investigators were chosen randomly, in accordance with the constitution.
The Commission announced on October 12 it would open an investigate former President Alvaro Uribe’s role in the wiretap scandal. Uribe has been accused of the illegal surveillance of Supreme Court judges, politicians, journalists and human rights workers.
The inspector general has already convicted four intelligence executives and Uribe’s personal secretary Bernardo Moreno for their role in the scandal.
