Colombia’s Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez asked Congress Wednesday to extend the statute of limitations in corruption cases against public officials from five years to eight, reported El Espectador.
In a discussion during the third debate in Congress over the Anti-Corruption Statute, Ordoñez put forward various requests on the topic.
Ordoñez said that instances of corruption are not always apparent until years after, and having a only narrow window to properly investigate corruption will hinder proper decision making.
“It would be a very important contribution to combat impunity,” the official states.
The anti-corruption statute was proposed to Congress by President Juan Manuel Santos in September of 2010.
