Colombia’s Inspector General announced Tuesday that his office has compiled a list of charges against Senator Piedad Cordoba, in relation to allegations that she collaborated with the FARC outside of the parameters of her role as a hostage release negotiator.
The investigation stems from evidence allegedly found in dead FARC leader “Raul Reyes” files, which the Inspector General’s Office claims suggest that the “Colombians for Peace” leader was involved in “FARC-politics.”
Email correspondence between Cordoba and the FARC allegedly “contains elements that are not about humanitarian aid,” reports El Tiempo.
Cordoba is in Europe rallying support for a “humanitarian exchange” of FARC hostages for incarcerated guerrillas. She has not yet been directly informed of the charges.
In the past Cordoba labelled the FARC-politics allegations a politically motivated “farce” and stressed that she has always obeyed the law, as a citizen and as a politician.
The Inspector General’s Office said that a decision on the cases of Gloria Ines Ramirez, Jorge Robledo and Wilson Borja, also linked to FARC-politics through the emails, will be made in the next few days.
The Inspector General began a preliminary investigation into the allegations last June.
