Colombia’s Inspector General has said that the Supreme Court is not fit to pass judgment on Mario Uribe, and the Public Ministry has asked that the trial be annulled.
The Inspector General’s delegate to the Supreme Court of Justice maintained that the Court was not competent to judge ex-senator Mario Uribe, cousin of President Alvaro Uribe, and insists that the natural judge of Uribe is the Inspector General’s Office, since Uribe waived his immunity as senator.
The representative of the Public Ministry was carrying out an order from Colombia’s Inspector General, Alejandro Ordoñez, issued to all delegates in trials involving congressmen allegedly linked to paramilitary groups who waived congressional immunity, reported newspaper El Espectador.
Ordoñez claims that in the new jurisprudence emitted by the Supreme Court to hear such cases, which have surpassed ordinary courts, is against the law and has thus requested all delegates of his office to nullify the cases.
Mario Uribe was a senator for political party Partido de la U and waived his political immunity after charges of conspiracy were brought against him. He is accused of having close ties to the former paramilitary commander of the AUC Bloque Cacique Nutibara, Fernando ‘Don Berna’ Montoya.
