Colombia’s Inspector General asked the country’s Supreme Court to
stop investigating 86 coalition Congressmen for their allegedly illegal
approval of a referendum needed to re-elect President Uribe.
According to the IG, there was no crime committed and the interrogations of the lawmakers is unnecessary.
The Court opened a preliminary investigation against the Congressmen after an opposition lawmaker filed a complaint. According to the lawsuit, the Representatives of the House approved the referendum while its finances were still under investigation and it seemed regulations concerning the financing of the initiative had been ignored.
The investigation led to unrest among lawmakers, who fear losing their seat in Congress if the Court decides to proceed with a trial.
