Legal experts from the International Criminal Court will be attending seminars in Colombia in order to exchange justice experiences in an attempt to strengthen Colombia’s internal justice system.
The seminars will be held from September 30 to October 1 hosted by the Colombian Commission of Jurists, Colombia’s Human Corporation, and the Jose Alvear Restrepo Lawyers’ Collective. The event is supported by the Coalition against the involvement of children in Colombia’s armed conflict, and the Coalition for the International Criminal Court.
The event will be attended by experts in international justice, such as Dr. Dadimos Haile, a member of Lawyers Without Borders, who will chair the conference on “The Role of Civil Society in Connection with Civil Investigations and Prosecutions of the ICC.” Dr. Francesca Varda, member of the Coalition for the ICC, will introduce the conference “The International Criminal Court: Jurisdiction, Mandate and Complementarity.” Dr. Yván Montoya, from the Catholic University of Peru, will introduce the conference “Imputation in Crimes of the System and the Fujimori Case.”
The Jose Alvear Restrepo Lawyers’ Collective reported that the attending organizations will also review the current stage of completion of the reservation made by Colombia to Article 124 of the Rome Statute, and will discuss their role in connection with investigations and prosecutions of the ICC. They will also debate experiences in international jurisdictions regarding war crimes and crimes against humanity, with the aim of strengthening national judicial instruments.
