Colombia’s National Police Director General Oscar Naranjo met with President Juan Manuel Santos April 4 to express his intention to resign.
Details of the meeting are only surfacing now because Santos told Naranjo they would discuss the matter further following the Summit of the Americas, which was hosted by Colombia April 14 and 15.
Colombia’s head of state is expected to ask Naranjo to remain at the helm for another year, although this outcome seems unlikely, according to news magazine Semana. Sources close to the police chief cite fatigue as being the main reason behind his resignation request. A date for the Director General’s departure has not been set.
President Santos is expected to meet with other high-ranking police officers to determine a plan for succession after Naranjo’s resignation.
General Rodolfo Palomino, director of Public Safety, is thought to be the most likely candidate to replace Naranjo.
Naranjo has enjoyed a long, illustrious career in law enforcement, becoming the first and only police to attain the rank of General in Colombia.
