The People’s Heritage Tourism Network of Colombia on Saturday presented an initiative to promote Colombia’s, lesser-known, cultural tourism offerings.

The cultural tourism promotion group launched a plan aiming to promote a new category of tourism in which to highlight Colombia’s religious, cinematography, gastronomy and musical offerings that provide for unique tourism experiences in certain culture-rich towns.

Their plan was presented during a summit in Santa Cruz de Mompox, a town in the northern Bolivar department. It strives to peel back another layer of Colombia and go beyond highlighting typical tourist destinations like Cartagena, the coffee region and Caribbean beaches. The plan also seeks to recognize and support the local people that live and work in these beautiful colonial towns.

“The goal is to improve the quality of life for the inhabitants of these localities; we intend to do with this project and will contribute to local cultural identity which is a fundamental characteristic of these territories,” said People’s Heritage Tourism Network program manager Catalina Velasquez.

People’s Heritage Tourism Network is a management platform that works to promote Colombia’s cultural heritage through tourism in an effort to generate more opportunities for development and sustainability in local municipalities deemed having cultural interest. There are 44 municipalities that are declared as having cultural interest, however the network has selected 14 that fully exemplify architectural, historical and environmental relevance and are truly a cultural tourism destination.
