A 35-year-old man died Sunday in central Colombia when a grenade he was carrying exploded during a confrontation with rival drug dealers.
The victim, named by police as Darwin Andres Moncada, alias “Relujo,” was reportedly shot at from a car carrying members of a rival drug gang, which mounted the pavement where Relujo was walking with his mother and sister. It’s thought that Relujo pulled the pin from the grenade as he fled the attack, detonating it in his hands before he had the chance to throw it.
Relujo’s mother and sister sustained minor leg injuries from shrapnel during the attack.
Metropolitan Police Commander Yesid Vasquez said the altercation was likely the result of Relujo selling drugs on rival turf, and the grenade was probably carried for protection.
