Colombian Green Party spokesman Luis Eduardo Garzon has rejected Antanas Mockus’ continued objectons to Partido de la U support for the party’s mayoral candidate, local media reported Thursday.
Garzon said that support from La U can’t be vetoed, and stated that, “The Partido de la U is President Santos, not just those who some people mention like President Uribe and in the country we are working towards alliances.”
Although Garzon admitted that there are internal divisions in the party, he said that Mockus objections, including a recent statement that candidate for Bogota mayor Enrique Peñalosa ought to join La U, don’t have weight, and that the party cannot be run by one man.
“I respect Antanas, these types of declarations surprise me because he is an inclusive man and that kind of evaluation surprises me because we must learn to live with our differences and for that reason it is strange that he proposed that,” said Garzon.
In regards to Peñalosa’s candidacy, he said that “We must support him, just as we supported Mockus in his moment.”
Mockus has continued to object to support offered to Peñalosa from former President Alvaro Uribe and La U, despite the fact that the majority of the Green Party has offered its backing to the alliance.
