Colombia’s Interior Minister has rejected the FARC’s call for a “political solution” to the conflict, beginning with a humanitarian exchange of prisoners.
Interior Minister German Vargas Lleras responded to a FARC communique released Monday, which advocated a “civilized” end to the conflict, stating that the government was unwilling to consider a humanitarian exchange, and that the FARC should release all prisoners without any conditionality.
“This is a resolved subject, the government has reiterated many times that the exchange is not an option, that it solicits from these organizations the unilateral liberation of the people that they continue to maintain in captivity,” said Vargas Lleras.
The minister also noted that the FARC proposal could not be taken too seriously, as “nobody is going to construct a scenario for a political solution without concrete acts that demonstrate real will to liberate these people.” He added that, “The government is not disposed to create a tribunal that doesn’t conduct anything.”
