The Colombian Government will neither stimulate nor oppose a Congress
debate about the possible re-election of President Álvaro Uribe, even
though the government wishes to deal with the judicial and political
reform proposals first, Colombia’s Interior and Justice Minister Fabio
Valencia Cossio said.
“The Government is not going to stimulate the debate, but we also can’t prevent it. First of all because Congress is autonomous and second, because according to law, the referendum must be processed,” Valencia told newspaper El Tiempo.
The Interior and Justice Minister didn’t rule out Uribe would still try to be re-elected in 2010, something the President had earlier signaled he preferred not to if the referendum would block the processing of the judicial and political proposals.
