The Colombian government denies involvement in the alleged
wiretapping of the human rights commission of the Organization of
American States (OAS) it said in a press release on Thursday.
The Inter-American Commission on Humen Rights (IACHR) Thursday claimed that it had received documents which prove that one of its members had been spied on by Colombia’s intelligence agency DAS.
In reaction, Colombia’s Foreign Ministry stated that the Government “rejects and
condemns any type of activities conducted by public servants, which
infringe the rights and hinder the exercise of the freedoms of people
or organizations and is expecting a prompt conclusion with regards to
the investigations and the identification of those responsible.”
The DAS in being investigated because it allegedly spied on a wide
range of people that it considered a threat to the government. Among people
who allegedly were subjected to illegal interceptions are Supreme Court
magistrates, journalists and human rights workers.
