Colombia’s national government will take control of the resources allocated to mayors for the rainy season, due to local governments’ inability to prepare for the impending severe weather.
Interior Minister German Vargas Lleras announced that Colombia Humanitaria, created by President Juan Manuel Santos in the face of the devastating catastrophe caused by the previous rainy season, will take over the public works funds.
“If the local and regional entities could not or were not capable of running the resources, then it will be Colombia Humanitaria that will perform these works,” explained Vargas Lleras
Santos has been critical of governors and mayors because of their inefficiency to adequately prepare Colombia for the new rainy season, predicted to be worse than last year’s floods which left two people million homeless and caused more than $5 billion in damages.
