The relations between the Court and the Uribe administration were severely damaged after the high Court had ordered the country’s Constitutional Court to investigate a possible illegality of the 2006 elections, after Yidis Medina was convicted for bribery. She had testified she was bribed by the Government to allow a constitutional change needed for the re-election of Colombian President Álvaro Uribe.
Uribe angrily called for a referendum to rerun the 2006 elections, trying to surpass the court order.
After intervention of the archbishop the Court President and the country’s President met in the archbishop’s palace in Bogotá. A meeting that was “fruitful” and a “step forward” according to the Presidency.
The Interior Minister met with the President of the Court Thursday to discuss the Medina case and the referendum.
The Government has not yet decided to stop the preperations of the referendum, but promised to permanently discuss issues like this with the Supreme Court.
Ricaurte and Uribe will meet again next week to further discuss the improving of relation between the two powers.
