The Colombian government has definitively “closed the door” to the possibility of future demobilized fighters being able to participate in politics.
The Interior Minister German Vargas Lleras said the proposed Framework for Peace, a constitutional reform being considered by Congress, will not allow former combatants to run for office, reported newspaper El Espectador.
There has been controversy among politicians over an article in the bill that was intended to allow those who demobilize in the future to run for public office.
Vargas said the “article of the bill has now been eliminated and will not be revived in the Senate. ” He said Congress must approve the bill, which will lay the foundations for an eventual peace process.
