Commander of the Colombian armed forces, Freddy Padilla de Leon submitted his resignation to President Alvaro Uribe last week, after five years at the helm of the nation’s military, El Tiempo reported Monday.
Although Padilla’s reasons for resigning are not yet known, the news comes days after the commander spoke of low morale in Colombia’s armed forces and the alleged violation of military law.
El Tiempo reports that Padilla requested to remain in his position until August 7.
Following Juan Manuel Santos’ resignation in 2009, Padilla was appointed interim defense minister, a post he held for four months.
The Casa de Nariño is currently searching for a replacement commander of the armed forces.
