Colombia’s Prosecutor General will lay charges against John Jairo ‘El Tige’ Esquivel Cuadrado for his role in the El Salado slaughter of February 2000, in which 61 people were killed.
The Prosecutor’s Justice and Peace Unit will charge ‘El Tigre’ with several offenses, including aggravated murder, terrorism, torture, carnal abuse and forced displacement, reported Caracol Radio.
Four paramilitary groups of more than 400 armed men entered the El Salado village. Dozens of people were tortured and several women were sexually assaulted. Along with the 61 murdered people, about 1,200 villagers were vicitmized.
Furthermore, according to information gathered by the prosecution, the paramilitary incursion in El Salado caused the forced displacement of more than 1,100 families, approximately five thousand people.
‘El Tigre’, who will be charged Tuesday, was head of the Juan Andrés Álvarez paramilitary group.
