Former DAS chief claims he is being framed

The former intelligence chief of the DAS, Alberto Romero, claimed Thursday that drug traffickers are trying to frame him for the 1990 murder of presidential candidate Carlos Pizarro.

Earlier that day, Colombia’s inspector general demanded that the prosecution investigate Romero for involvement in the murder. According to the Inspector General’s Office, there is enough evidence that link the former intelligence official to the assassination.

Romero however claims he is innocent and that drug traffickers, who were being persecuted by his office in that time, are behind the accusations.

Former M-19 guerrilla and presidential candidate Pizarro was murdered on April 29, 1990 whilst aboard an Avianca airline flight during his campaign.
