The Foreign Ministers of Colombia and Ecuador shook hands
Wednesday when meeting in Peru and announced they are looking at options to
improve relations that were strain since March 2008 when Colombia
bombed a rebel camp on Ecuadorean soil.
Colombian Foreign Minister Jaime Bermudez and his Ecuadorean counterpart Fander Falconi were both in Lima, Peru to attend the meeting of the Andean Community, CAN.
Before entering the meeting, Bermudez told news agency Reuters “we are exploring options for rapprochement.”
After the brief meeting, Falconi confirmed the two governments are seeking to establish a dialogue to overcome the differences.
The March 1, 2008 bombing of a FARC camp in Ecuador led to the complete suspension of ties between the two neighbors. The recent announcement of Colombia that it closed a deal with the United States to allow the North Americans to use Colombian military bases for counterinsurgency operations in the region led to fierce criticism by Quito that considers an expansion of U.S. military in the region a threat for its sovereignty.
