The heavy rains wreaking havoc across Colombia are affecting the prices of food domestically, said President of the National Retail Federation union, Guillermo Botero.
Products with short harvests such as fruits and vegetables have begun to register a drop in production which has in turn sent prices up, reported Caracol Radio. For example, the price of onions and green beans has doubled in just one week.
Cities that have been cut off by road blockages have been the first to feel the effects of the price hikes.
Botero believes this will have a negative effect on inflation, which was at 3.19% in March, in April, although analysts believe otherwise. Earlier this month the consumer price index indicated that the price of fruits and vegetables had increased 5.64% in the month of March.
In some regions where the rain has been particularly heavy there is a risk that entire crop plantations could be wiped out.
