Three soldiers and two guerrillas have been killed in combat with Colombia’s largest rebel group, the FARC, in the northwestern department of Antioquia, the army said Thursday.
According to an army press release, combat had broken out with members of the FARC’s 36th Front of the rebel group in the Briceño municipality.
The three soldiers died after the rebels activated hidden explosive charges, said the army. Two more soldiers were wounded in the attack, as well as two suspected members of the rebel group, who were subsequently captured.
The left wing rebel group is currently in peace negotiations with Colombia’s government, however President Juan Manuel Santos has made clear on several occasions that the government will not agree to a ceasefire until a definitive peace agreement is reached, stating that a bilateral ceasefire would “give an advantage” to the rebels.
