A Colombian soldier in the Spanish army has been wounded in Afghanistan, becoming the first Colombian casualty in that war.

Juver Muñoz Pineda, 20, will fly back to Spain with Defense Minister, Carme Chacon, and will have to undergo surgery for injuries suffered to his hand and knee in an attack in Herat.

Four of the five injured in the attack have chosen not to return to Spain, but rather to remain on-base in Herat to complete their Afghan rotation, which will end in three weeks.

Pineda suffered cranial trauma and fractures of his patella and right hand, along with multiple injuries to the right hand side of his face, reported news source Terra.

Pineda was transported in a Hercules from Herat to the base of Manas in Kyrgyzstan, supported by a medical team from Madrid. From there, the delegation headed by Defense Minister Chacon will be transported by the Spanish Air Force to the Canary Islands.

Corporal Cristo Ancor Cabello was killed in the attack and will be buried Friday in Las Palmas de la Gran Canaria.
