Colombia's FARC in Paraguay

Dissident FARC members ‘likely to join rebels in Paraguay’

Dissident factions of Colombia’s FARC are likely to merge with Paraguayan rebel group EPP, a prosecutor from that country said Tuesday.

The prosecutor, Sandra Quiñonez, raised concerns about the possibility that members of Colombia’s largest guerrilla group, FARC, would integrate with the Paraguayan People’s Army (EPP). a nationalist leftist rebel group.

According to Quiñonez, is likely that those FARC members who disagree with the ongoing peace process with the Colombian government, will emigrate to Paraguay and join the ranks of the EPP, whose ideology is similar to that of the FARC.

“It is likely that they come to Paraguay. It has happened before,” the prosecutor told the Paraguayan radio station 780AM.

Quiñonez confirmed that members of FARC have previously been in Paraguay instructing EPP members in their rural terrorism techniques. The prosecutor said that this was especially apparent in the case for the 2005 kidnapping and murder of Cecilia Cubas, daughter of former Paraguayan President Raul Cubas.

“What they have done before is not an invention, it is data from the Colombian government itself,” said the prosecutor.

The Paraguayan government last year also warned about an alleged cooperation between the two rebel groups that have both sustained themselves through kidnapping and extortion.
