Colombia’s largest rebel group, the FARC, on Sunday killed two Colombian soldiers and injured three more in a mine explosion in western Colombia.
At approximately 4PM on Sunday afternoon, the FARC allegedly detonated a bomb that had been placed in a mine located in the rural village of Puerto Frazadas two hours outside the municipality of Tulua in the Valle del Cauca department. The triggered explosion resulted in the deaths of two soldiers and left three others injured. According to Lieutenant Colonel Marco Antonio Castillo Velasco, the soldiers were performing tactical missions in the area when the bomb went off.
“The person in charge of this subversive action,” said the colonel, “was [FARC] ringleader [alias] Cesar Muelas. For now we will continue with [our] efforts to dismantle this structure [the FARC column known as] Victor Saavedra.”
The colonel also called the deceased soldiers “heroes of our National army.”
