More than 12,000 Colombians in the department of Antioquia were left without electricity after the FARC allegedly blew up an energy tower with dynamite on Wednesday, Caracol Radio reported Thursday.
The municipalities of Toledo and Peque in northern Antioquia were plunged into darkness Wednesday evening and according to latest reports remain without electricity Thursday.
The FARC have been blamed by officials for having committed the “terrorist” action, in which they attacked a power line and tower of the Medellin public works authorities (EPM).
Three further municipalities, San Jose de la Montaña, San Andres de Cuerquia and Ituango were also affected by the explosion, although the EPM were able to reestablish electricity in these areas.
The military are in the process of securing the area, while it is hoped that the EPM will be able to restore the electricity flow to the remaining areas within the next few hours.
