FARC does have ties with ETA, TVE says

by Adriaan Alsema June 22, 2008
1.1K

Weekly TVE documentary ‘Informe Semana’ bases its claim partly on documents that earlier caused both the Colombian and Spanish governments to investigate if the FARC and ETA had been collaborating to assassinate Colombian Vice-President Fransisco Santos during a visit to Madrid.Colombia’s neighbors, Ecuador and Venezuela, question the authenticity of these files, after Colombia accused both countries of respectively receiving support from and supporting the guerrillas. Ecuador asked the Organization of American States to investigate whether the computers really belonged to Reyes and if Colombia’s accusations are true.

The Spanish documentary also showed a video, seized by Colombian armed forces in December 2007, in which guerrilla ‘Juan Santrich’ addresses a message of support to the ETA and calls on the Spanish government to “end the savage repression of the Basque people”, warning that “Spain will not have stability until the conflict with Euskal Herria (Basque country) is resolved”.Demobilized FARC guerrilla ‘Carlos’, interviewed by ‘Informe Semana’, said he had meetings with members of the ETA.”They were Spaniards that told us they were part of the Batasuna political group and were active members of the ETA. They wanted to share their experiences and tell us about their struggle in Spain,” the former guerrilla said. The Spanish government hasn’t yet concluded its official investigation of the alleged ties between the two insurgent groups.
