FARC should not be granted immunity for crimes against humanity, claimed a senior spokesman from Human Rights Watch Monday.
“The heinous war crimes in Colombia cannot go unpunished after the peace process,” argued Jan Egeland, who is the Deputy Director of Human Rights Watch and Director of Human Rights Watch Europe.
Egeland served as the UN special envoy to Colombia between 1999 and 2002, and was present at the previous peace talks, which failed ten years ago.
However, the veteran remained optimistic about the outcome of the peace talks, noting key differences between the current peace process and the failed effort in Caguan. In particular, he argued that there exists a serious agenda to end the conflict.
Phase two of peace talks between the government and FARC representatives are due to begin this week in Oslo.
