FARC declare Monday that establishing a continental political movement is an “urgent duty”, and state that the U.S. seeks to destabilize democratic processes in Latin America.
The declarations were made in a letter sent by FARC guerrilla boss ‘Alfonso Cano’ to the Constituent Congress of Lat Am’s Continental Bolivarian Movement, which is currently meeting in Venezuelan capital Caracas, reported Terra.
“Establishing a continental political movement of the Bolivarian essence, just as the American empire deploys its military force throughout Colombia and has … set out machines of war and terror against Latin American and Caribbean peoples, is not only a historical necessity but an urgent duty” said the guerrilla leader in the letter.
The letter further indicates that the military pact signed between Colombia and the United States in early November is not confined solely to the combat of drug trafficking and terrorism, but “seeks to destabilize the processes of democratization and independence taking place in Latin America.”
The pact involves the U.S. military having permission to use various airbases throughout Colombian territory for a period of 10 years.
Both Bogota and Washington have reiterated that this pact does not pose any threat to Colombia’s neighbours, as claimed by Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela, but has provoked ongoing tension across the region.
