Two people have been injured in an alleged FARC attack on the building where failed peace talks were held between 1999 and 2002.
The rebels threw three grenades at the building in San Vicente del Caguan, in the southern Colombian department of Caqueta, injuring a soldier and an engineer, according to an Army statement.
The location of the strike is significant given the statement released by FARC supreme leader “Timochenko” earlier this week, which urged the government to restart the peace agenda “left hanging” in the demilitarized zone of El Caguan years earlier.
President Juan Manuel Santos swiftly told the rebels they could “forget about another Caguan”, demanding that they issue “real facts of peace,” rather than more rhetoric.
Ex-senator and peace advocate Piedad Cordoba later stressed that “Timochenko” was not calling for another DMZ to be created, but that the issues discussed during the El Caguan negotiations be reconsidered.
The army is holding the Teofilo Forero Mobile Column, the FARC’s elite unit responsible for today’s attack.
Colonel Wilson Diaz, a military commander in El Caguan told newspaper El Tiempo that the building is now being used by a road construction contractor.
