An alleged FARC attack has killed three Colombian Army soldiers during hard combat in the southern Caqueta department, local media reported Tuesday.
The combat between the presumed guerrillas of the FARC’s Teofilo Forero Column and the army’s 87th infantry battalion took place in the Puerto Rico municipality, located some 250 km southwest of the country’s capital, Bogota.
According to an unnamed source speaking to Caracol radio, the FARC launched the attack to disrupt the construction of a new militarized bridge in the area.
On Sunday, FARC guerrillas blew up a bridge in San Vicente del Caguan, located about 50 km from the site of Tuesday’s attack.
Caqueta has traditionally been a hotbed of guerrilla activity. In June, oil company Emerald Energy reported a shutdown in production due to repeated attacks and threats from FARC units.
