The Colombian government promised to provide aid to over 800 people from nearly 250 families in the central department of Antioquia, who were reportedly displaced last week by the FARC.
The region’s ombudsman of the region has asked for government assistance for the families from the Antioquian town of Ituango, saying that local authorities were overwhelmed. The families are sheltered in a local high school and await promised government aid.
The ombudsman also requested military support to stem the tide of violence which broke out around the Antioquian town last week.
The ombudsman added that some affected by the violence are unable to leave their homes, due to mines planted in the area by the FARC in order to restrict their movement.
According to the ombudsman, many of the same familities were displaced for similar reasons last year.
