The jailed ex-security chief of former president Alvaro Uribe will be sentenced by a U.S. court on December 7, reported local media Friday.
Uribe’s former chief of security, Mauricio Santoyo, will likely face a sentence of between 10 to 15 years in a U.S. jail for collaborating with the now defunct paramilitary group AUC, acts of illegal wiretapping, and drug trafficking.
The sentencing was originally scheduled for November 30 but has since been delayed by a week.
Santoyo pleaded guilty in August to collaborating with illegally armed groups and has reportedly cooperated extensively with U.S. officials in a bid to reduce his sentence.
The ex-official is just one of the many public figures who have been implicated in the parapolitics scandal – the seeking of political or economic benefits through ties with paramilitary groups. While many of those charged, such as Santoyo, were closely allied to Uribe, the former head of state has so far escaped conviction.
