A judge found ex-Bogota councilman Vladimir Melo guilty on Thursday for conspiring to murder his wife, and sentenced the man to 41 years in prison.
According to the hearing, Melo met with three hit men in a cafe on July 17, 2009 to orchestrate the murder of his wife. Melo allegedly paid each hit man $2,785 because his wife had discovered that he was involved in an extramarital affair.
The three hit men that plead guilty and were subsequently sentenced to 17 years in prison, testified that they met in a cafe to go over the details of the murder with the ex-councilman who belonged to a Christian political party.
An article published by newspaper El Tiempo reported that Melo insisted on his innocence, and maintained that he had nothing to do with the murder.
