Colombia’s second largest guerrilla group ELN asked the country’s
largest rebel group FARC to join forces to avoid a U.S. “invasion” into
Venezuela.
The rebels published an open letter to their Marxist colleagues wherein they call for an end to violence between the two leftist insurgencies. According to the letter, their earlier request received a nagative response from the FARC Secretariat.
In their latest appeal, the rebels remind the FARC that both guerrilla factions “fully share” the “respect and support for the people and the government of the sister Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.”
According to the ELN, he Colombian decision to allow U.S. troops to operate on its soil and conduct counternarcotics operations from Colombia is a threat to Venezuela, that has been “stigmatized by yankee imperilalism.”
“We have to join forces against the imperialist invasion,” the ELN says.
Both the ELN and the FARC have been at war with the Colombian State since 1964. Colombia accuses Venezuela, a fierce opponent of the U.S.-Colombian military pact, of supporting the rebels.
