‘ELN guerrillas’ kill three soldiers

An attack left three soldiers dead in Arauca on Sunday morning; authorities attributed the shooting to Colombia’s second largest left-wing rebel group, the ELN.

The attackers wore civilian clothes and approached the soldiers on a motorcycle before shooting “indiscriminately against the troops,” who were patrolling near a cemetery in La Esmeralda, a small town in the Arauquita municipality near the border with Venezuela.

One of the soldiers survived the initially attack but succumbed to his injuries upon entry to the hospital. The soldiers belonged to the 18th Brigade.
