Ecuador will receive two Chinese radars which will be placed at the border with Colombia, reported newspaper El Universal on Monday.
The radars, which are expected to arrive within the next month, will be positioned in two border locations with one in the Amazon and the other on the Pacific coast.
According to the Ecuadorian military, within the next 15 months, four more radars will arrive which will be “capable of detecting all types of targets, including helicopters”.
Radar surveillance will take place 24 hours a day, claimed an army spokesman.
Ecuador’s decision to reinforce its border with Colombia came after March 2008 when Colombian security forces bombed a FARC encampment on Ecuadorian territory, without Ecuadorian permission. This has resulted in a breakdown of relations between the neighbouring countries.
The two countries are currently in the process of rebuilding diplomatic ties.
