Ecuadorean Security Minister Miguel Carvajal on Monday praised the “very strong” military blow the Colombian government inflicted on the FARC through Operation Sodom, which killed guerrilla commander “Mono Jojoy.”
Carvajal said that the success of the military operation “obviously strengthens the presence of the Colombian state in its territory” and stated that Ecuador will maintain permanent observation to avoid any incidents in Ecuadorean border territory.
“What has happened in the past few days has revealed the magnitude of the capacity of rebel groups” said Carvajal, adding that Ecuador will maintain a “clear policy” to “prevent the negative impacts of the Colombian internal conflict,” Spanish newswire EFE reported Monday.
Ecuador broke off diplomatic ties with Colombia in March 2008, following a Colombian raid on a FARC camp within Ecuadorean territory. The two countries have since been working towards restoring ties, and improving their relationship.
The Colombian border region of Putumayo has recently seen an increase in fighting between FARC guerrillas and the Colombian military.
