Police detain two indigenous Ecuadoreans near the Colombian border on suspicion of selling military supplies to the FARC, Colombian and Ecuadorean press reported Sunday.
The police body charged with controlling organized crime in Ecuador, ULCO, detained the two persons in Otavalo, north of Quito, near the Colombian border.
The confiscated supplies included 1,500 meters of explosive cord, two guns, camouflage tents and uniforms, and communication apparatuses.
Various media sources report that an ULCO agent told Ecuadorean TV station Ecuavisa that members of indigenous groups are easily convinced by traffickers to carry supplies for guerrillas, and especially for the FARC.
The anonymous agent is quoted as saying that these indigenous “don’t measure the danger” involved in illegal arms transportation.
