Two Cali museums have teamed up to create an exhibit that presents the different religious conceptions held by pre-Columbian and colonial Christian cultures in Colombia.
The 35-piece exhibit called “Pasion, muerte y resurreccion: Dialogo de culturas” (Passion, death and resurrection: Dialogue of cultures) opened Tuesday, April 12 and runs through May 12, according to an events posting by the Cali Culture and Tourism department.
The display aims to “establish a dialogue between the pre-Columbian cultures of southwest Colombia and colonial Christian culture around the perceptions they had of the concepts of passion, death and resurrection and of the similarities in their material representations,” according to a Semana Santa news bulletin.
Furthermore, the display accomplishes this “without giving importance to the era or their [the cultures’] geographic location, in order to give shape to their realities and religious, mystical or spiritual experiences.”
The exhibit is a product of the first joint project between the Museo Arqueologico and the Museo de Arte Colonial y Religiosa La Merced, and displays the most representative pieces from each museum.
A number of conferences will be held in the museums over the course of the month to complement the visual display.
