The annual ball for foreign ambassadors to Colombia has been canceled due to alleged threats from guerrilla group the FARC.
“Every year we meet at a ball, this time at the Hotel Tequendama in Bogota, but the German Embassy, who would have chaired the event, just notified us that it is canceled,” Ecuadorean diplomat Ricardo Solorzano told El Tiempo.
The annual ball, attended by all diplomatic delegations to Colombia, is organized by the wives of the ambassadors to raise funds for charity.
Colombia’s defense minister on Saturday announced special security measure after an anonymous email to the Dutch Embassy claimed the FARC planned a series of attacks on embassies.
Authorities are currently investigating the alleged threads against seven foreign ambassadors and the Apostolic Nunciature, the Vatican’s diplomatic mission to Colombia.
Solerzano added that “we must take precautions against groups outside the law that want to destabilize peace, tranquility and progress.”
