Defense Minister Gabriel Silva introduced the Colombian government’s new Democracy Plan Wednesday for the upcoming presidential elections, claiming that security forces will “cover” 99.7% of voters.
The minister stressed the importance of the information collected by the Central Electoral Integrated Intelligence, which was implemented six months ago, and has uncovered plots to disturb the election by narco-terrorist groups.
“We will use the successful strategy of the agency’s intelligence that allows us to prevent or neutralize possible attacks by narco-terrorists during the electoral process,” said Silva.
The Defense minister plans to personally visit eight sites around the country from the 13th to the 21st of May to ensure security protocols are in place.
On Tuesday the government assigned 200,700 members of Colombia’s security forces to protect proceedings from possible attacks.
Last week Colombian authorities announced new security measures including an additional 500 police to protect candidates inthe lead-up to the presidential elections.
Colombians will go to the polls on May 30 to elect their next president.
