The remainder of Venezuela’s pending debt to Colombian exporter will be paid off this year, said the country’s ambassador to Bogota Monday.
According to Colombian economic paper La Republica, ambassador Ivan Rincon said the debt resolution was on the right track.
The paper said that at the beginning of the year some $96 million of the initial $800 million caused by a 2010 trade block imposed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez was still not paid.
The Venezuelan government had previously stated that the delay in the debt payment was due to Caracas’ scrutinizing of each individual claim. According to the Chavez administration, Venezuelan importers were using Colombian trade to illegally obtain foreign money which is restricted in the socialist country.
