The deadline for candidates to register for Colombia’s October local elections is pushed back to August 10.
Colombia’s state council announced that undeclared candidates would now have until mid-August to register, as opposed to the previous deadline of July 30.
The council also announced that it would change a previous regulation that prohibited chiefs of political parties from running for office for a year after stepping down from their positions. This year the law will only apply to political leaders who are still party directors after July 14. This should allow former Bogota mayor Anatanas Mockus to run without obstacle.
Finally, political parties were also reminded that they are required to grant at least 30% of their nominations to women.
