Partido de la U, Colombian President Álvaro Uribe’s most loyal
coalition partner, agrees with a coalition meeting to unitedly seek a
candidate for the 2010 presidency, but wants clarity about Uribe’s
possible re-election first.
According to newspaper El Espectador, the party will not agree to such a multi-party meeting until 2010 when it is absolutely certain Uribe will or will not run for the presidential elections that are held in that same year.
Other coalition parties have already agreed to the multi-party consult to seek a presidential candidate that can continue the current administration’s Democratic Security policy.
But Partido de la U does not want to talk about a next generation of Uribista politicians, until it is certain Uribe himself will not be available, de la U chairman Carlos Ferro told his Consevative Party counterpart Efraín Cepeda.
“He told me that they want to come to the inter-party consult, but added that they do not want to do it this year (…) doctor Ferro expressed we could have a multi-party summit, but without pushing Uribe in any position,” Cepeda told the newspaper.
Colombia’s Congress is to continue debates about Uribe’s possible re-election in March.
It is uncertain if the other coalition parties are willing to wait until election year to start the discussion about a possible united candidate, while other parties if start their campaign before.
