Felipe Muñoz, director of security agency DAS, denies talking to an official from the Prosecutor General’s Office about destroying evidence of the illegal wiretapping of government opponents.
Muñoz says he did not speak to the director of the Technical Investigation Team of the Prosecutors General’s Office, Marilu Mendez Rada, to discuss destroying evidence on illegal telephone interceptions.
According to former DAS spy chief William Romero, Muñoz and Mendez had a telephone conversation in which possible irregularities in legal proceedings are revealed, reports Radio Santa Fe. Romero has reportedly presented investigators three boxes of audio and video recordings, archives and documents, that are evidence of the illegal spying activities of the DAS.
Romero told investigators from the Prosecutor General’s Office that in 2008 he was ordered to destroy the material by the now jailed ex-intelligence chief of the DAS, Fernando Tabares.
Muñoz announced he would fully cooperate with the Prosecutor General’s Office in its investigation on illegal wiretapping and the destruction of evidence related to it.
Muñoz became director of DAS after it became public that the agency was illegally spying on the Supreme Court, journalists, politicians and human rights organizations.
